Captain Jim Pound, President

Captain Jim Pound has spent over 40 years in the marine industry. 17 years were shipboard as a deck hand, officer of the watch and Captain of ships operating in the Great Lakes and Eastern seaboard of Canada and the U.S. 20 years ashore in various management positions ending as Vice-President, Operations for Algoma Central Corporation. Captain Pound is presenting on the Board of Directors for the Great Lakes Pilotage Authority a Federal Crown Corporation overseeing navigation safety on the Great Lakes. 

Captain Pound has been active in industry groups with particular interest in electronic navigation systems and the advancement of navigation safety. He has represented the marine industry as co-chair on a number of committees dealing with new technologies. He is Past President of The Marine Club.

Jim is a graduate of Georgian College’s Marine Navigation Technology program.

 Rev. Judith Altree, Executive Director

In addition to being the mission's Executive Director Judith is also our chaplain serving the ports of Toronto and Oshawa.

(The Very Rev.) Peter Wall, Director

The Very Rev. Peter Wall is an appointee to the MTSSO Board by the Bishop of Niagara. Wall is the Dean of Niagara and Rector of Christ’s Church Cathedral in downtown Hamilton. Dean Wall has been involved with the mission for several years, and highly values the work which the Mission does in Southern Ontario.Peter is very active in national and international church matters, serving on the Council of General Synod, the national Faith Worship and Ministry Committee, the Liturgy Task Force, and as Co-Chair of the Joint Anglican Lutheran Commission for Canada. Currently he is also serving as the Canadian Church’s representative to the Executive Council of the Episcopal Church, USA.In his ‘spare’ time, Peter loves to sing, which he has done for most of his life, and is a member of The Three Cantors, a group of three priests who sing concerts across North America, raising money for the Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund.

Vicki Gruber, Director
Vicki joined the Harbour Master’s Office/Port Patrol team in Hamilton in 2006, and assumed the role of Patrol Supervisor in 2014. Later that year, Vicki was promoted to her current role: Manager, Port Security and Harbour Master – HOPA Ports, where she oversees port security, emergency response and harbour operations for the Ports of Hamilton and Oshawa. Of the 17 Canadian Port Authorities, Vicki is one of only two female Harbour Masters. Vicki has over 25 years of experience in the security industry, and is involved with numerous community and professional organizations. Vicki is a member of the Board of Directors for the Mission to Seafarers Southern Ontario and Vice Chair of the Community Awareness and Emergency Response Group. 

Michael Carter, Director

Michael Carter is Executive Vice President of Canada Development Investment Corporation, a Federal Crown Corporation. He is a Chartered Accountant, married to Linda Carter with two children and four grandchildren. His previous non-profit volunteering include Canadian Executive Services Overseas, Toronto Montessori Schools as Chair and The Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Hungary as Chair.

Rev. Jeff Ward, Director

Jeff was born in Atlanta, Georgia and raised in Montreal and the GTA. Jeff holds a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration (York) a Master's Degree in Education (University of Toronto), and a Master's Degree in Divinity (Trinity College, University of Toronto).

He spent 20 years in the technology manufacturing industry where he served in many capacities, beginning as a Certified Engineering Technologist (Electronic), and leading organizational and leadership development for all levels of management up to the CEO. After several years as a Senior Supply Chain manager, he left the technology industry and finally answered the call to ordained ministry. Jeff is married to Sue-Ann who is also an Anglican priest, serving in the Diocese of Niagara. Together, they have raised four wonderful children and enjoy the company of their seven energetic grandchildren as often as possible.

Jeff has a passion for people and holds a particular passion for outreach through social justice, compassionate care, and family ministry in his practice of ministry. He is constantly seeking excellence in all aspects of ministry and the inclusion of all people in the church of God. Jeff has served on and lead several not-for-profit boards. He has also been an active member of the Interfaith Council of Halton for several years and is very active in making his local community stronger and healthier.

Gwendolyn Julien-Mendeiros, Director

Gwendolyn maintains a multifaceted career in organizational development and people development as a business consultant, leadership coach and educator within the public, private and non-profit sectors. She obtained a Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) at Ryerson University, a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) at the University of Toronto, Professional Coaching Credentials (CPCC) with The Coaches Training Institute, and a Master of Arts in Leadership from Royal Roads University. Her Master’s thesis was titled “Developing a Strategic Approach to Stakeholder Engagement at SOS Children’s Villages Canada”, which sparked a passion for helping organizations better understand and utilize their social capital. Gwendolyn’s work with Directors of non-profit organizations started with a focus on board effectiveness. Gwendolyn is a relentless champion of personal expression and fulfillment in work and life and she regularly participates in arts, culture and wellness activities. She lives in Toronto with her husband and two children.
