Hours: 35 hours per week
Location: Mission to Seafarers Southern Ontario, 651 Burlington Street East, Hamilton, ON L8L 4J5; hybrid work possible

This role is contingent on the approval of Canada Summer Jobs funding. Canada Summer Jobs requires applicants to be between the ages of 15 and 30 as of May 12, 2025, a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident, and legally entitled to work in Canada. About the Mission to Seafarers Southern Ontario

The Mission to Seafarers Southern Ontario (MTSSO) is committed to supporting the physical, mental, and spiritual well-being of seafarers. We provide a warm, welcoming environment, practical assistance, and emotional support for those who spend long months away from home.

Position Overview

​

The Marketing Coordinator is a temporary, hands-on role designed to provide practical support for MTSSO’s operations during the summer months. The position focuses on assisting with marketing initiatives, event logistics, Mission Centre hosting, and other tasks that help fill gaps in day-to-day operations. This role is ideal for a student looking to gain real-world experience in nonprofit outreach, marketing, and community support while contributing to the well-being of seafarers.

 

Position Responsibilities
​

General activities and functions include, but are not limited to:

 

Marketing & Outreach

  • Engage with community stakeholders and partner organizations to promote MTSSO’s mission.

  • Assist in preparing content for social media, newsletters, and the website.

  • Support the promotion of key events such as:

    • Day of the Seafarer (June 25): Help with event logistics and promotion of annual dinner celebration.

    • National Seafarers Day (Sept 26): This year’s theme is “Navigating the Future: Safety First!”

 

Fundraising & Event Support

  • Help with the setup, coordination, and execution of events, including the Celebration Dinner.

  • Research potential grant opportunities and support grant-writing tasks.

  • Assist with donor communications, including sending thank you notes to event sponsors.

 

Mission Centre Support

  • Welcome and assist visiting seafarers at mission centres, providing a friendly and supportive environment.

  • Help seafarers access local resources, Wi-Fi, and telephone services.

  • Organize and maintain donation areas, including books and clothing.

  • Assist with keeping supply lists up to date and notifying staff of shortages.

  • Prepare and maintain refreshments, ensuring the centre remains inviting and hospitable.

  • Accompany senior staff/volunteers on ship visits, as required.

 

Qualifications
​
  • Passion for helping others and supporting MTSSO’s mission.

  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills.

  • Highly organized, able to prioritize multiple tasks and deadlines and able to multi-task

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, taking initiative where needed.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Suite.

  • Familiarity with social media platforms and tools for content creation (e.g., Canva or similar platforms).

  • Interest in or willingness to learn about the maritime industry.

  • Proficiency in additional languages (e.g., Polish, Ukrainian, Hindi, Indonesian, Tagalog) is an asset.

  • Access to a reliable vehicle and a valid driver's license is considered an asset.

  • Vulnerable Sector background check will be required upon acceptance.
