On March 31st, the Mission to Seafarers Southern Ontario was honoured to take part in the Port of Toronto’s 164th annual Top Hat Ceremony, marking the arrival of the first ocean-going vessel of the season.
Continuing a cherished maritime tradition, PortsToronto President & CEO RJ Steenstra officially crowned Captain Sergei Soldatkin of the MV Blacky with an antique silk top hat. This symbolic gesture celebrates the opening of Toronto’s commercial shipping season and recognizes the vital role of seafarers in global trade.
As part of the ceremony, our Board Chair, Kelly McDonald, and Reverend Judith Alltree warmly welcomed the crew on behalf of the Mission to Seafarers Southern Ontario, presenting them with thoughtful gifts in appreciation of their journey.
For over 164 years, this event has stood as a testament to the dedication of the men and women who navigate our waters, ensuring the movement of essential goods. We are proud to be part of this meaningful tradition and to support seafarers as they arrive in our port.
